The Hidden Value Of A Renewable Energy Consultant

As the UKs renewable energy sector incrementally matures and an increasing number of discerning homeowners are looking at low carbon solutions, it doesn’t take long for technical and choice information overload to take hold and plenty of confusion to arise.

Meet The Renewable Energy Consultant

Luckily there are an elite bunch of talented and experienced renewable energy advice professionals that have been involved with renewable technology products for longer than most, have seen successes and failures, and are poised to help you navigate them successfully first time.

Stand-alone specialist consultants who are independent and not tied to any particular product (or be responsible for installing and commissioning equipment) may sometimes fall into the “nice-to-have” category. Their cost can sometimes be prematurely cut from a project without a true understanding of their powerful and long lasting value to the project.

Of course prices for advisory work can simply be read and compared, but the increasing complex nature of renewable energy integration can lead to a general “penny wise, pound foolish” mentality. Where all specialist labour (structural engineers, hydrologists, M&E consultants, etc.) cost is compared equally and paid for advice without a tangible end product is mistakenly devalued.

Benefits Of Employing A Renewable Energy Consultant

Looking beyond cost most clients will admit that if they could reduce risk, enhance the chances of project success, save time and resources, as well as reducing project stopping headaches; that would be a great thing.

In addition focusing on the “what if” costs quickly focus the mind and all of a sudden the opportunity to ensure these can be avoided at all costs seems very attractive.

Just think, how much it would cost if…

  • The fundamental building thermal design is wrong?
  • The specified boiler and underfloor system were incompatible and had to be replaced?
  • The installation could not get the high value governments subsidies available?
  • We inadvertently employ a rogue installer who leaves us high and dry?
  • The ongoing annual heating system running costs could have been significantly reduced with just a bit more thought?

Well this is what an energy integration consultant is in business to do and all of sudden the “high” hourly or fixed price cost seems like ridiculously good value, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately for those who do choose cost over value they could be inadvertently setting their project on a costly trajectory which may only be revealed when it too late.

We often see the value of our consultancy services shine when the imbedded knowledge within our consultant’s brains can confidently and analytically answer questions without the fluff and sales babble it would otherwise have taken the architect and client days, if not weeks to investigate and resolve.

In addition the option of making a consultant responsible for specifying a working system, making sure key technical information is communicated and catching those costly specification inclusions makes the client and architect feel secure. Indeed it is this feeling of security, responsibility and accountability where the true value lies in the specialist service; and when successfully negotiated will be appreciated for a long time to come.
